Sheriff warns suspects of pipe bomb threat in Midland City

MIDLAND CITY, Alabama (WTVY) – Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum issued a stark warning to additional suspects in connection with a pipe bomb threat early Friday morning.

During a related investigation, officers discovered a pipe bomb hidden in a home in a Midland City neighborhood.

Dale County Sheriff’s officers, along with the Dothan Police Department Bomb Disposal Squad, entered the home of 43-year-old Mickey Sego on County Road 53.

Inside the house, officers discovered a completed pipe bomb with a timer and grenade fragments attached. Officers from the Dothan Police Department’s Bomb Disposal Squad were able to safely dismantle the bomb.

“It was designed to cause harm. It was designed to cause damage and it was designed to cause massive destruction over a wide area,” Sheriff Bynum said.

Sheriff Bynum also said Sego was merely collateral damage in an ongoing theft investigation.

“We know there is a certain group of people involved in the theft investigation that know more than they are letting on,” Sheriff Bynum told News4. “These suspects should know they are under pressure and we are not going to let up on the pressure. Get ready.”

Although it is unclear what Sego’s intentions might have been, he was arrested shortly after 1:00 a.m. and charged with “possession of a destructive joke device.”

Sego is expected to face federal charges. The ATF is assisting the Dale County Sheriff’s Office in its investigation.
