Shooting in White Center ends with man taken to Harborview

Seattle police are investigating after a 23-year-old man was shot twice near White Center around 4 p.m. Sunday

A spokesperson for the Seattle Police Department (SPD) told MyNorthwest that the shooting occurred near 16th Avenue Southwest.

When officers arrived, they found the 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg and lower back. He was treated at the scene by the Seattle Fire Department and then transported to Harborview Medical Center.

The SPD said the man’s condition was stable but serious and his injuries were not life-threatening.

The spokesman also reported that officers had so far found 17 cartridge cases.

Police also said two masked suspects, possibly in their late teens or early 20s, were seen leaving the area. The spokesperson said the King County Sheriff’s Office helped SPD track down the suspects with a tracking dog, but they were unable to find them.

No arrests have been made so far.

A woman who wished to remain anonymous told KIRO 7 she witnessed the shooting.

“And I thought it was fireworks, but all I heard was bam. Bam. Bam. Over and over again,” the woman told KIRO 7.

KIRO 7 said the woman told reporters she rushed to the man’s aid after the shooting.

“The boy is lying on his side and is obviously bleeding. He is bleeding from his back,” she said.

According to KIRO 7, the woman claimed she rushed into the gas station and asked the clerk for paper towels to help the man. She said she then began applying pressure to the man’s back to stop the bleeding.

“I put my gloves on. I have no medical training. Nothing. This is crazy,” she said. “He says, ‘Am I going to be paralyzed? Am I going to die?’ I say, ‘No, you’re fine. Just keep talking. Don’t move.'”

The SPD said it was investigating the background to the shooting.

The spokesman noted that the case has not yet been assigned to an investigator, but investigators from the Gun Violence Reduction Unit are usually assigned to such cases, he said.

The spokesman added that this was preliminary information and could change as the investigation progresses.
