Should the Dallas Cowboys turn to NFL free agency again for DL reinforcements?

The Dallas Cowboys have turned to NFL free agency several times throughout the season to bolster the depth of their defensive line, but it is still questionable whether they should sign any more players before the start of the regular season.

With newcomers like Jordan Phillips, Carl Lawson and Al-Quadin Muhammad among the added names, there is still an interesting option available.

Enter: Former Minnesota Vikings star Linval Joseph.

MORE: Cowboys linked to former defensive midfielder Mike Zimmer

Joseph played as a defensive tackle under Zimmer for six seasons, was twice selected to the Pro Bowl and established himself as one of the league’s best run-stuffers.

Although Mazi Smith has had a solid training camp and preseason, it would be unwise for the Cowboys to bet everything on him. And behind the former first-round pick are seventh-round pick Justin Rogers and undrafted free agent Denzel Daxon.

With final cuts looming, it would be wise for the Cowboys to sign Joseph, especially after new recruit Jordan Phillips announced he will play 3-Tech in Dallas rather than 1-Tech, where Mazi Smith is the expected starter.

But we’ve seen how negotiative the Cowboys are when it comes to signing contracts and how little urgency there is from the office, so Joseph could end up being just another big “what if.”
