SMU moves from a Group of 5 program in the American Athletic Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference to take another big step forward as a program. The Mustangs won the AAC with a group that ranked in the top 40 in the country in most major statistical categories, including offense (38.7 points per game, 8th) and defense (17.8 points per game, 11th). They finished the regular season with nine straight wins before losing 23-14 to Boston College in the Fenway Bowl.

Nevada is entering its third year under coach Ken Wilson and has finished two consecutive 2-10 seasons. The Wolfpack began the 2023 season with six straight losses, winning two straight games against San Diego State (6-0) and New Mexico (34-24) and losing four straight to close the year. Nevada ranked 124th nationally in offense (17.3 points per game) and 114th in defense (33.4 points per game), which could be a bad mix against a versatile SMU team to open the 2024 season. SMU is a 26-point favorite.

The Mustangs and Wolfpack will kick off at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) on CBS Sports Network. Live streams are available on FuboTV (free trial) and DirecTV Stream (free trial). The contest will also stream on Paramount Plus (free trial).
