Snyder fails in the semifinals and will fight for bronze on Sunday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In his third Olympic Games with USA Wrestling, Ohio State graduate Kyle Snyder (97 kg) advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with two wins on Saturday.

He failed in the semifinals, meaning he had to fight for the bronze medal on Sunday. He will be fighting for his third medal in an Olympic competition.

In the opening round, Snyder was down 0-4 after the first round against China’s Awusayiman Habila. In the second round, Snyder caught up, defeated Habila 9-1 and won the fight 9-5, advancing to the quarterfinals.

Snyder gets a four-pointer, but China fights back and wins. Habila is up 4-0. At halftime, Habila is up 4-0.
Snyder gets a takedown and is now behind 4:2. Then Snyder steps out, 4:3. Snyder gets a leg attack takedown and leads 5:4. Snyder gets a step out, 6:4. A low single from Snyder gets another takedown, 8:4. Habila gets a step out at the edge, 8:5. China fights but loses, 9:5. Snyder in the quarter finals.

Cuban Arturo Silot Torres faced Snyder in the quarterfinals.

Snyder led 1-0 after the first period after Silot was put on the shot clock but failed to score. With just over 30 seconds left in the second period, Snyder put Torres on his back and got the win to advance to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Snyder faced Ahmed Tazhudinov from Bahrain.

Snyder scored the first point when Tazhudinov ran out of time. Tazhudinov countered with a takedown and secured a 2-1 lead after the first round.

Snyder fell behind 6-1 after a takedown and turn by Tazhudinov. Snyder scored with a pushout and a late takedown, but lost 6-4.

He will now face Magomedkhan Magomedov of Azerbaijan for a bronze medal on Sunday. The match starts at 6:35 a.m. The match will be streamed live on Peacock.

Snyder won Olympic gold in 2016 (Rio) while still a member of the Ohio State wrestling team, and then took silver in 2020 (Tokyo).
