BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – A low pressure system moving across the northern Gulf of Mexico will bring some moisture and rain showers to the region. However, areas near and north of the state line will likely remain mostly dry, while scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected along the coast. In between, the Baton Rouge metropolitan area can expect a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon, with highs in the 90s to 100s.
Rain next week
Monday and Tuesday will see lower chances of rain, keeping temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius. Increasing humidity also means that heat index values will be higher, although most areas should remain under heat warning criteria. A wave of deeper tropical moisture moving into the area in the second half of the week will increase rainfall.
The Weather Prediction Center’s 7-day forecast shows a north-south gradient of rainfall amounts through next Saturday. Areas north of Baton Rouge are expected to receive less than 0.50 inches of rainfall, areas near and south of Baton Rouge will average 0.5 to 1.0 inches, and areas closer to the coast will receive 1.0 to 2.0 inches or more.
Expanded outlook
As Labor Day weekend begins, a more active pattern returns in terms of rain chances. Rain chances are at 50 to 60% Saturday through Labor Day Monday. However, the increased chance of rain should help keep highs closer to normal at 35 to 40 degrees Celsius.
