Sonos customers still prefer the old S2 app over the new one, according to Sonos CEO Patrick Spence, but he insists the iOS app won’t be returning anytime soon.

The latest update to the Sonos app has left many users unhappy. Since its release, there have been frequent complaints about the loss of popular features and the general decline in functionality.

Spence has publicly apologized for the inconvenience caused by the app’s redesign, but in fact the older version of the app, known as S2, cannot be restored, according to The Verge.

Why Sonos can’t bring back the S2 app

During a recent Office Hours Q&A on Reddit, Spence addressed ongoing concerns about the app. He acknowledged user frustration and expressed regret that rolling back to the S2 version is simply not possible. The reason is due to the extensive updates to the software that runs not only on the app, but also on the speakers and in the cloud.

“The challenge is that Sonos is more than just a mobile app. It’s software that runs on your speakers and also in the cloud. In the months since we launched the new mobile app, we’ve updated the software to the point where S2 is now less reliable and stable than users remember,” said Spence.

The tech entrepreneur noted that after extensive testing, it became clear that re-releasing the S2 app would make the problems worse rather than solve them. The old system had become incompatible with the current ecosystem, making a rollback impossible without further problems.

The way forward: improving the current app

While the inability to revert to the older app is disappointing for many, Sonos is committed to improving the current app experience.

According to Apple Insider, Spence assured users that the company is now fully focused on optimizing the new software to meet consumer expectations.

As part of this commitment, Sonos is working on several key improvements. One of the main priorities is to make the setup process for new products more reliable so that users experience fewer problems during installation. In addition, the company is striving to reduce the frequency of the dreaded “Something went wrong” errors that have plagued the new app since its release.

What’s next for Sonos users?

While there’s no going back to the previous app, Sonos users can look forward to a number of updates designed to improve the current experience. The company has taken user feedback seriously and is working hard to resolve the most pressing issues.

For now, Sonos users will still have to use the current iOS app, but with the prospect of ongoing improvements, there is hope that the experience will soon be more in line with what customers expect from the brand.

While Sonos works to restore its reputation, the focus remains on providing a more stable, reliable app that meets the needs of its loyal user base.
