South Cedar Street will reopen after sinkhole repairs are completed

The latest:

Charlotte Storm Water Services says it has completed repairs to the stormwater main that caused a sinkhole near Bank of America Stadium in Uptown Charlotte.

The sinkhole was located under South Cedar Street, between Morris Street and West Morehead Street.

The road is expected to reopen on Tuesday, August 13. Crews will continue to perform minor work in the area.

Original story (Posted: July 30, 2024):

CHARLOTTE, NC – A massive sinkhole is closing off a busy area outside Uptown Charlotte until further notice.

On Tuesday, crews worked at the corner of South Cedar and West Morehead, where a fence lines the collapsed concrete.

“You don’t really notice it until it happens, you know?” said Zach Ferrini, who works in the area. “I know it’s pretty common in other places in the world, so it’s pretty crazy to see something like this happen here on the street.”

Charlotte Water officials say a burst water main caused the sinkhole. No one was injured. Residents in the area say they have noticed more frequent flooding recently.

“Flooding is pretty common here. We have to move all our cars and everything,” said Kendyl Bradley, who lives in the area. “So we’re used to it and that’s what happened (Monday) and then (Tuesday) morning we woke up to this (sinkhole).”
While crews continue to work to repair the damage and reopen the road, some people in the area are struggling with loss of water pressure and are forced to take detours.

A spokesperson for the city of Charlotte said CDOT is adding an emergency closure to the interactive closure map so that WAZE and other GPS systems can help drivers avoid the construction site in Cedar and Morehead.

Charlotte Water officials did not provide a timetable for when the work might be completed.
