South Dakota School of Mines unveils modernized Veterans Resource Center

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – South Dakota Mines places great importance on caring for its student veterans.

The school held a ceremony Monday to unveil its newly renovated Rich and Trudy Wells Veterans Resource Center.

The renovations are part of the Surbeck Center expansion project and are intended to provide students with access to needed facilities and resources.

Trudy and Rich Wells generously donated $1 million to the center.

The center will serve as a resource for veterans, who will have access to math and writing tutoring, help with cover letters and resumes, and assistance with scholarship searches.

“Veterans have unique experiences, and here we have a place where they can come together with people who somehow understand what they are going through and have been through,” says Derek Flom, director of the Veteran Resources Center at the South Dakota School of Mines.

Flom added that the school is excited to open the center right at the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

Deanna Lien also donated to help modernize the facilities.
