Spotify claims ‘small step’ to victory in price war with Apple in the EU

Spotify won AppleConsent to display pricing information for European Union users in its iOS app.

Spotify opts for Apple’s ‘entitlement’ for music streaming services, created following the European Commission’s landmark decision Antitrust law ruling against the tech giant in March, according to an updated blog post on Wednesday (14 August).

“This means we can finally offer something that is as obvious as it is long overdue: iPhone customers in the EU will now see pricing information for Spotify in the app and can purchase items directly on our website,” the post said.

The change will allow iPhone users in the EU, for example, to see the prices of the company’s summer special promotion and learn how much a Spotify Premium plan would cost after the promotion ends, the post said.

However, this is a “small step” in a larger Efforts to provide iPhone users with the same experience as users of other phonesaccording to the article.

“Unfortunately, Spotify and all music streaming services in the EU are still unable to provide consumers with a free and easy way to click on a link to purchase in the app, as Apple continues to charge illegal and predatory taxes despite the Commission’s decision,” the post said.

Apple did not respond to PYMNTS’ request for comment.

The European Commission imposed a fine of almost $2 billion on Apple March 4 After the company was found to have abused its position in the music streaming market by preventing app developers from alerting iOS users to alternative, cheaper music subscription services – such as Spotify – which is illegal under European antitrust law.

Apple responded by announcing appeal In its decision, which was adopted in May, the Commission criticised the fact that it had “failed to find credible evidence of harm to consumers”.

The iPhone maker also took aim at Spotify – whose complaints triggered the Commission’s investigation – and said the company met with the Commission 65 times during the investigation. Apple also pointed out that Spotify has a 56% share of the European music streaming market.

“A large part of their success is thanks to the App Store, along with all the tools and technology Spotify uses to build, update and share their app with Apple users around the world,” the company said. at the time.
