Starbucks in Battlefield Mall closes; Hiland Dairy introduces lactose-free milk to its range

In this week’s restaurant news from Springfield, a mall cafe is closing and a local dairy is adding lactose-free milk to its menu.

Starbucks in Battlefield Mall closes

It appears that the Starbucks at Battlefield Mall, 2825 S. Glenstone Ave., has closed. The cafe is no longer listed in the mall’s directory and the Springfield Contractors Association has submitted a proposal to close this business. The phone number listed for the location is no longer available or no longer in service.

A request for comment to Starbucks’ national facility manager and a Battlefield Mall spokesperson remained unanswered at press time.

Those looking to fill a Starbucks need near the mall can still walk across the street and go to the stand-alone cafe at 2616 Glenstone Ave. or the cafe inside Barnes and Noble at 3055 S. Glenstone Ave.

Springfield Dairy now offers lactose-free milk

Springfield-based Hiland Dairy is expanding its lactose-free range with another product. Lactose-free milk is now available in stores in both full-fat and 2% milk varieties.

Last month, Hiland added lactose-free sour cream and lactose-free cottage cheese to its products.

“This addition to our product line reflects our commitment to addressing diverse nutritional needs and aligning with overall trends toward milk alternatives and specialty diet products influenced by health trends, demographic shifts and evolving eating habits,” said Sarah Carey, marketing manager at Hiland Dairy.

People with lactose intolerance have trouble breaking down the lactose sugars found in milk, which can lead to diarrhea, gas and bloating after consuming dairy products, according to the Mayo Clinic. Medline Plus, a resource of the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health, says about 65% of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after childhood.
