Costner’s signature cowboy films were added to Tubi just as the Hollywood star was enjoying a renaissance. In June of this year, Costner returned to the popular genre that made him one of the modern Western auteurs. Horizon: An American Saga was released to mixed reviews, and Costner’s plans to make an epic film series were suddenly in jeopardy. Chapter 2 of horizon was supposed to be released in August, but now the film is on its way to the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where Costner will have to prove once again why he is the last great cowboy actor and director.

In the meantime, audiences can enjoy not one but two of the greatest films in Costner’s filmography; both starred the actor in his prime, and both are perfect examples of his ambitious vision as a storyteller of modern Westerns.

Open Range: One of the most authentic cowboy films of all time

Open range with Costner, Robert Duvall, Annette Benning, Diego Luna and Michael Gambon. The film is based on the novel The Open Range Men by Lauran Paine and tells the story of Boss Spearman and Charley Waite, cattle ranchers who must face the wrath of a rancher who hates their way of life. Boss and Charley are forced to embark on a quest for vengeance and justice against Baxter.

The film, which was deemed extremely authentic by experts, was a box office success for Costner, who had previously suffered some flops, and a return to westerns was not exactly a sure thing. However, the film was praised as a solid revisionist western and still has a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was Costner’s last western before he tried again with Horizon: An American Saga.
