“Strictly” favourite Amy Dowden has spoken about her battle with cancer and revealed which detail made her “cry the most”.
The 34-year-old Welsh dancer has bravely shared her journey with stage three breast cancer with her fans since being diagnosed in May 2023.
And Amy, who returns to Strictly this year, has now spoken about losing her hair during her cancer treatment.
Amy Dowden on her fight against cancer
Strictly star Amy learned she had breast cancer in May 2023 after discovering a lump in her breast. Amy’s condition was confirmed in February of this year.
To inspire others, Amy shares more about her cancer story in her new memoir, Dancing in the Rain.
The next challenge became increasingly obvious
And in an excerpt from the book, Amy revealed that the thing she cried the most was losing her hair.
Strictly star Amy cried the most about her hair loss
“My life away from Strictly has been decidedly unglamorous,” she said in the extract, seen by MailOnline.
And I think I cried more about it than about anything else
“With each new chemotherapy session, the next challenge became more and more obvious. Before I could say goodbye to cancer, I had to say goodbye to my hair. And I think I cried more about that than anything else.”
Amy added: “I would have to trim it, clip it and eventually shave it completely – and then face the horrible decision of appearing on national television with a scraggly bald head.”
Strictly star Amy “grateful”
In April, Amy admitted that she was “grateful” to have been given “another chance at life” after her battle with cancer.
During her appearance on BBC Breakfast, Amy was asked by presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent how she was. She replied: “I’m really fine, thank you.”
“I can’t believe it’s been a year since I discovered the lump. I’m just so grateful for the treatment I’ve had this year. The NHS and all the charities and everyone who has helped me to still be here today.”
Amy on discovering a knot
Amy also described what it was like when she discovered the lump at just 32 years old. She described her story in detail: “The day before I left for my honeymoon, I discovered a lump.
“Of course, when I got back, I went to my GP and yes, I was told that unfortunately it was stage three cancer and I needed a mastectomy and chemotherapy.”
