Summit County Bridge Inspection: Which Bridges Need Repair?

There are more than 550 bridges in Summit County, 100 of which are identified as needing repair or rehabilitation, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The Ministry of Transport gave 17 of the 100 bridges a rating of “unsatisfactory”.

Five of the bridges need immediate repair or replacement, while repairs to the others can wait, said Aaron Engelhart, office manager of the Summit County Engineer’s Office. Another bridge on the list has already been closed for replacement.

Here’s a look at some of the bridges with structural defects, including the location of each bridge and the average daily traffic volume, as well as when it was last inspected. According to officials, these bridges are all scheduled to be repaired in the near future.

Which bridges in Summit County are most in need of repair?

Here are the five bridges in Summit County that need immediate repairs:

  • Snyder Avenue over the Tuscawaras River in Barberton – 6,047 riders daily. Last inspected March 2022.
  • Wheatley Road via Riding Run in Richfield – 3,170 riders daily. Last inspection January 2023.
  • Brady Avenue via Wolf Creek in Barberton – 825 drivers daily. Last inspection October 2022.
  • Bowery Street over the Ohio Canal in Akron – 8,859 riders daily. Last inspected March 2022.
  • 250 Kent Street above the Little Cuyahoga River in Akron – 10,397 riders daily. Last inspection August 2022.

The Granger Road bridge over Yellow Creek in Bath also received a poor rating and is in need of repair, but has been closed for replacement since July 8.
