Superbike racing returns to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

LEXINGTON – Superbike racing officially returned to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course today for the first time since 2014 with the Permco MotoAmerica Superbikes Aug. 16-18 at Mid-Ohio.

Originally called the AMA Superbike Championship, an annual Superbike race was held at Mid-Ohio for 32 consecutive years from 1983 to 2014.

Fast forward to 2024, Permco MotoAmerica Superbikes at Mid-Ohio is reviving North Central Ohio tradition with the 33rd running of the event, featuring the 48th and 49th all-time Superbike races on a 2.4-mile, 15-turn road course.

The seventh of nine rounds of the 2024 Steel Commander Superbike Championship will see nearly 150 riders compete in 12 races across six different motorcycle series during the two-wheeler weekend at Mid-Ohio, with the doubleheader of the Steel Commander Superbike and Mission King of the Baggers series being the main attraction.

Additional races in the Supersport, Junior Cup, Mission Super Hooligan National Championship and Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race Support series round off the packed schedule.

Riders on this weekend’s starting line-up include two former Mid-Ohio Superbike winners – Cameron Beaubier (2014) and current championship leader Josh Herrin (2013).

Other notable competitors with ties to the Buckeye State include CJ LaRoche (Bellaire, Ohio), Brian Mullins (Cincinnati, Ohio), Robert Noe (New Franklin, Ohio), Larry Pegram (Hebron, Ohio) and Anthony Sansotta (Marion, Ohio).

Mullins and Hayden Gillim, a Superbike and King of the Baggers competitor from Owensboro, Kentucky, both serve as riding coaches in the Mid-Ohio School’s Performance Track Riding program, so it’s a home race for both riders.

“(Mid-Ohio) is one of the best race tracks in the country,” Pegram said. “The elevation changes – there’s a little bit of everything here. There’s low speeds. There’s high speeds. There’s everything here.”

“I’ve been looking forward to coming back to Mid-Ohio for a long time,” Gillim said. “It’s always been one of my favorite tracks. It was the first road race I ever did as a kid, so it’s a big deal for me to be racing here again.”

Permco MotoAmerica Superbikes at Mid-Ohio offers fans a great behind-the-scenes look and fun for all ages. Visitors have free access to the paddock to get up close and personal with the bikes and riders.

Autograph sessions will take place here on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, motorcycle enthusiasts can take free test rides on the latest models from BMW, CFMOTO, Harley-Davidson and Yamaha.

Finally, there is family fun in the Free Kids Zone infield with fairground games, bouncy castles, a Stryder bike course and much more.

Weekend tickets are $95, and day tickets start at $40. Children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by a ticketed adult.
