Surprising if Drake Maye starts in week 1

Mike Reiss was a guest on Tuesday’s “Toucher & Hardy” to share his thoughts on the New England Patriots’ quarterback competition.

Brissett over Maye?

Parts of the conversation have been shortened for clarity.

Fred Toucher: Do you think there is a real debate with the coaches in the front office about who should start in Week 1? And if so, what is their tendency?

Mike Reiss: I buy it. I think they’re leaning toward Jacoby Brissett.

I liken Fred to a horse race. I think two weeks ago we were on the home stretch and Jacoby Brissett was so far ahead. But now Drake Maye is coming from the outside and they’re on the home stretch. And I don’t want to say it’s a nose-length, but Drake Maye is charging here. That at least gives the trainers something to talk about.

For me, there was so much catching up to do in the home stretch that I would be surprised if they chose Drake Maye. But at least he’s made things interesting here the last few weeks.

Daniel Roche: Who would you go with, Mike?

Rice: I would go with Brissett. Looking at the games the last two weeks, it’s clear it’s Drake Maye. But then you listened to Bill Belichick yesterday, and I heard you talk about that in the previous section when he talked to Pat McAfee.

Belichick said something like, “Focus more on practice than on games.” And I thought that was a really good point from a great coach. Because what do we see in the games? We see him playing against second and third line players. There’s no intrigue.

I think Drake was probably a little better in practice too. Not to mention Jacoby barely played in the preseason games, so just looking at the games, it’s almost like an unfair advantage for Maye.
