Suspected lightning strike leads to tense times at Wayne County oil facility

WAYNESBORO, Mississippi (WDAM) – A commotion sparked by a suspected lightning strike at an oil production facility caused some tense moments and a major traffic backup off U.S. 45 in Wayne County Friday night.

According to the Wayne County Department of Emergency Management website, residents on County Farm Road were ordered to remain in their homes while rescue crews and emergency vehicles flocked to the intersection of U.S. 45 and County Farm Road.

Pictures taken near the scene of the accident showed a long line of cars on a highway that had been narrowed to one lane, with black smoke rising from the horizon to the left.

The first emergency management warning was posted online at around 6:15 p.m. on Friday. The post said, among other things: “All motorists are asked to avoid the intersection of Highway 45 and County Farm Road.”

However, the same post pointed out that emergency services were still on site and traffic was being diverted away from the intersection.
