TAMIU launches Safe Zone app to increase campus safety

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – TAMIU has welcomed thousands of students back for the fall semester. This class promises to break records, so TAMIU has decided to increase safety measures.

The start of the fall semester brings with it many dreams and hopes among students.

The number of students enrolled in universities increases every semester, prompting universities to strengthen their security measures to protect students and staff.

The Safe Zone app will replace the university’s previous warning system, Dustyalrt.

With just a tap, users can access a range of safety services, from emergency assistance to mental health support.

TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz was excited about this new initiative and encouraged students and staff to install the software on their phones.

“We have now switched to Safe Zone, a much better app. This app is something that students and staff can install on their phones so they are instantly informed of any incidents on campus and can plan accordingly,” said Dr. Arenaz.

According to Cordelia Perez, police chief of TAMIU, registering for the app is extremely easy.

The only requirement for teachers, students and staff is their TAMIU email address. The app also includes an important feature that makes it easier to provide help.

“The benefit of Safe Zone is that once the person presses a button, there is a tracking device. Police can locate you if you are in a building or anywhere on campus. We can locate you and get to you faster,” Perez said.

With the new app, the university hopes to be able to respond more efficiently in an emergency.

Perez adds that students, faculty and staff can contact university police 24 hours a day.
