HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) — Tax-free weekend officially begins Saturday in Massachusetts.
People we spoke to on Friday said they are looking forward to the upcoming tax-free weekend and will be buying some expensive items.
“It’s not called ‘Tax-a-chusetts’ for nothing, you can shop as long as you don’t pay taxes,” says Iliana, a resident of Springfield.
The Bay State’s highly anticipated Tax Free Weekend takes place Saturday and Sunday.
Western Mass News surveyed local shoppers to find out what items they plan to purchase.
At Manny’s Appliances in Wilbraham, we were told, business has already picked up.
“We’ve already had a pretty busy week with tax-free deals and a lot of people picking out their device in advance,” sales representative Kari Mongeau told us.
Employees told us that between the tax-free holiday and other special offers at Manny’s, customers can save a lot of money on their home appliances.
“We have ongoing sales and discounts from manufacturers,” Mongeau claimed. “The maximum savings are usually around $160.”
Western Mass News also stopped at the Holyoke Mall and spoke with Joe Furnari, owner of Furnari Jewelers.
He told us that the tax-free weekend attracts more customers than almost any other time of the year.
“It’s almost become a national holiday in terms of spending money and shopping. I know our store and other stores have 30 or 20 percent off all year round, but that doesn’t excite people as much as this tax-free weekend. It just puts them in the shopping mood, almost like Christmas,” he said.
Items such as cars, gasoline, tobacco and marijuana products, meals, alcohol, and installment sales are not eligible for the tax-free weekend.
As a reminder, all retail stores in the state of Massachusetts that are open this weekend must participate in the tax-free holiday, so you might want to get out there and take advantage of the deals.
