Teenager killed in boating accident was a rising freshman at Rutgers University

For Zeina Mahafzah, there were only a few days left until the start of her freshman year at Rutgers University, as classes begin on Tuesday, September 2nd.

According to university spokeswoman Dory Devlin, Zeina was enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences–Newark.

“The Rutgers-Newark community is devastated by the news of Zeina’s passing, and we send our support to the Mahafzah family during this incredibly difficult time,” Devlin said.

In a post shared on on facebook.Zeina’s father, Al, said a prayer service in his daughter’s honor will be held at the ICPC Mosque in Paterson on Wednesday, August 28.

Mahafzah graduated from Wayne Hills High School in the spring. Mark Toback, superintendent of Wayne Schools, said, “I have been in contact with the Mahafzah family and at this time we are unable to comment. We respect the family’s wishes during this tragic and difficult time.”

As Daily Voice previously reported, Zeina was on a raft being towed by a boat through the waters of Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, when she was struck by the boat’s propeller, said Sergeant Jeffrey Lebron of the New Jersey State Police.

Mahafzah, who tried to board the boat, died. NBC Philadelphia It was previously reported that it was a bloody scene as Mahafzah was “dismembered”.
