Teenager who died in a boating accident on the New Jersey coast was able to begin his freshman year at Rutgers University just days later

The 18-year-old who was fatally struck by a boat propeller blade in Ocean County over the weekend was enrolled at Rutgers University to begin his studies next week, university officials said.

Zeina Mahafzah of Wayne has been accepted into Rutgers-Newark University’s School of Arts and Sciences-Newark, university spokeswoman Dory Devlin said. She has been enrolled for the fall semester, which begins Sept. 3.

“The Rutgers-Newark community is devastated by the news of Zeina’s passing, and we send our support to the Mahafzah family during this incredibly difficult time,” Devlin said.

Mahafzah was on a raft towed by a boat in the waters off Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, said Sergeant Jeffrey Lebron of the New Jersey State Police.

“While attempting to board the ship, she was hit by the ship’s propeller,” police said.

The police said the incident was still being investigated. No further information was immediately available.

Sunset Park is located on the bay side of Harvey Cedars, which is in the northern part of Long Beach Island.

Mahafzah graduated from Wayne Hills High School, said Wayne Township Superintendent Mark Toback.

“We have been in contact with the family and respect their wishes, so we cannot comment at this time,” he said.
