Combining the vibrancy of copper with the warmth and depth of terracotta, Terracopper is the color of choice for statement makers this fall.
At the beginning of 2024, hair trends ushered in a shift toward subtle, natural colors that focus on hair health and shine. But this fall/winter season, a bold cold-weather favorite is entering the zeitgeist—with a rich twist. Copper is a shade that, while natural to some, is consistently trending in salons at the change of season thanks to its warmth and the beauty with which it reflects fall’s earthy color palette.
This year, the rich shade is getting an update of sorts. Trend forecaster Tom Smith (known in the industry as “The Hairvoyant”) has dubbed this shade “Terracopper.” It combines the warmth and vibrancy of traditional copper tones with a luxurious intensity that borders on red – and it’s going to be seen everywhere.
What is the terracopper hair trend?
As the name suggests, Terracopper is a blend of copper and terracotta tones, resulting in a deep, reddish-brown finish that still has an orange shimmer.
Tom Smith, international artist in residence at Billi Currie and international creative colour director at evo, coined the term and describes the colour as follows: “A rich and intense terracotta copper tone that is just a little stronger than a naturally occurring red.”
Smith points out that these reddish tones are often on trend during the fall/winter months, “as the fall foliage and late summer sun inspire us to wear warm tones.”
How to request Terracopper
When asking your hairdresser for this luxurious, autumnal shade, “ask for a copper tone with rich, earthy undertones,” advises Smith, as the goal is to achieve a color that’s a little richer than a natural red tone.
Who should get Terracopper?
While this radiant color can suit anyone, Smith especially recommends it for those with “fairer skin or a pink undertone,” as the warmth of this look can help skin appear brighter and more golden.
How to care for Terracopper after the appointment
Unfortunately, like all bright hair color trends—like burgundy brown and bright red—this coppery shade can be prone to fading, so Smith recommends using a similarly copper-pigmented conditioner to refresh the shade. A healthy, reflective shine is also key to enhancing your hair color, so we recommend adding a product like Cult Beauty’s Color Wow Dream Coat to your routine as well. This will protect your hair and provide a glossy sheen.
