Whether you’re heading out for a night of honky-tonkin partying in Fort Worth, hitting the slopes on 6th Street in Austin, or spending some time across the state line at the casinos in Lake Charles and Shreveport, one thing is for sure: you’re going to need cash. But in today’s world, “cash” isn’t what it used to be.
What we mean by this is this: you don’t always need “hard coins and paper dollars” to pay for things. And no, you don’t always need to have a credit or debit card. In today’s high-tech world, all you might need is a bank account, a smartphone, and one of the many highly regarded money transfer apps.
The three apps I’m most familiar with are Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App. The latter, Cash App, was the subject of a court ruling and if you used the app to transfer or receive funds between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024, you may be entitled to a refund.
During this period, Cash App users were exposed to a number of data leaks. It is estimated that around 8.2 million Cash App users were affected by the leaks. If you believe you are one of them, you should file a claim to be part of a $15 million compensation.
This settlement states that the court found that Block Inc., the owner of Cash App, “acted negligently and breached other obligations” because the company “failed to implement appropriate controls to prevent unauthorized access.”
The data breach is said to have involved a former employee who downloaded investment reports containing confidential data. About a year later, another data breach is said to have occurred, using data from the first breach to gain access to affected accounts.
