Get ready for a huge wave of nostalgia as you rewatch Rimuru’s first encounter with Veldora, the mighty Storm Dragon.

“That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Chronicles” is an interesting retelling of the original story as it includes both 2D and 3D graphic elements.

The first few hours of the game brought back a lot of fond memories of my first time watching anime and put a smile on my face at times. It also gets pretty straight to the point, so you don’t have to worry about having to sit through a plot point that drags on.

Those expecting additional story content will unfortunately not find it here, as the game places great emphasis on following the story as faithfully as possible to the original material.

Side-scrolling action gameplay has never gone out of style

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Chronicles took a very retro approach in its choice of gameplay elements and style. This game is a side-scrolling action RPG where you explore areas and kick loads of monster loot to score juicy loot.

Combat is surprisingly fun, as it closely resembles the classic 2D control scheme of an old fighting game. Certain button inputs trigger certain abilities. Once you learn which button does what, combat is insanely fun and action-packed.

Speaking of abilities, this game is incredibly flashy, especially when you start using a lot of special abilities. Many abilities have animations that pause the game until the animation plays out. This could be irritating if you prefer more fluid combat experiences, so keep this in mind if you like to immerse yourself during combat sequences.

Navigating the dungeons was super easy, which unfortunately made them seem superficial at times as I felt like I was completing them too quickly. This could be a good thing if you prefer more action as it takes no time at all to get into a fight.

While this game is about building a nation, the buildings themselves are more about empowering your characters. It’s worth building the nation, but you don’t have to invest a lot of time into it. It’s a feature that’s helpful, but it’s also not a huge focus in the game.

Recruit and play as one of your favorite characters from the anime

A leader needs his people and there are many characters to choose from.

For most of the game, you play in a party of five and recruit many familiar faces as the story progresses.

Everyone you recruit plays differently and has their own strengths and weaknesses, giving us players plenty of options if we get stuck on a particular boss.

If you’re not a fan of character swapping, you could theoretically play with the same party for most of the game too, as Rimuru is insanely strong and versatile.

A game that real slime fans will appreciate

Compared to what you usually see on the market in terms of anime games, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Chronicles may be a surprise, but especially in terms of the choice of basic gameplay mechanics, it was a pleasant surprise.

Sure, some would say side-scrolling action is outdated, but it was a real refresh, especially given the market saturation with open-world exploration games.

I liked that the game focused on retelling the story and letting me experience all of Rimuru’s crazy fights from the anime for myself. The game is literally centered around the slime and I’m glad it didn’t stray from the source material.
