The 7 best sunscreens for hair and scalp – and experts explain why you need them

If you only applied sunscreen to your forehead this summer, you’re missing out. Sunscreen for your scalp and hair may seem superfluous, but it’s not a superfluous step in your skin care routine. According to skin experts, it’s essential.

Meet the experts:

  • Dr Anita Sturnham is a general practitioner specializing in dermatology and anti-aging medicine at Solice Health.
  • Lucy Shaw is a skincare expert and head of skincare education at Mecca Cosmetica.

“Your scalp is an extension of the skin on your face,” says Dr. Sturnham. “Just as UV rays can damage your skin cells and accelerate skin aging on your face, we know they can also damage your scalp and hair follicles.” This damage most commonly appears as sunburn, but there are lesser-known consequences of sunbathing without adequate scalp protection.

What are the risks of not protecting your hair and scalp with sunscreen?

  • Sun damaged hair: If you’ve ever noticed that your hair has bleached after prolonged exposure to the sun, you’ve probably suffered a sunburn on your scalp. “Acute sunburn weakens hair, causing dryness and brittleness, and changes hair color,” says Dr. Sturnham, stressing that the latter is especially likely in synthetically colored hair.
  • Hair loss: Then there’s the risk of damage to the follicles, which can become inflamed when exposed to UV radiation, leading to healthy hair growth. “At a cellular level, studies have shown that UV radiation slows cell repair and increases the rate of cell death in parts of the hair follicle.” This, combined with the fact that UVA rays “trigger the release of inflammatory signals” that send your hair into the catagen (or shedding) phase, can lead to increased hair loss and thinning.
  • Increased risk of skin cancer: These relatively superficial risks are just the beginning – Dr. Sturnham adds that even a single sunburn on the scalp can increase your risk of skin cancer. “Repeated UV exposure over the years increases your lifetime risk of skin cancer,” such as melanoma, which often occurs on the scalp but can go unnoticed under a full head of hair.

Do you need sun protection for your hair and scalp?

“Sun protection is absolutely essential for the scalp,” says Shaw, a skincare expert at Australian sunscreen brand Mecca. People with bald patches or lighter hair should take note: In her expert opinion, it is especially important for “areas that are not naturally protected by thick or highly pigmented hair,” such as the hairline and crown. “I recommend applying a light sunscreen to both the face and hairline, and of course wearing a hat.”

The best sunscreens for hair and scalp at a glance:

Ultrasun SPF50 UV Face and Scalp Mist

Best for: SPF refreshment when travelling and during water sports

Size: 75ml

Why we love it: Athletes trust the effectiveness of Ultrasun, which protects the skin from strong outdoor sun exposure. The brand developed by Swiss chemists is the first choice for strong sun protection. This spray creates an aerosol mist that does not leave a greasy film. In addition, it comes in a can that fits comfortably in your hand luggage and does not leak. A spray that you can take with you on yacht vacations as well as on tennis dates.

Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Sun Serum SPF50+

Best for: oil-free sun protection

Size: 50ml

Why we love it: This fast-absorbing serum has a texture typical of the best K-beauty products and is kind to the scalp. First off, it contains advanced PA++++ filters—the kind you only find in Korean and Japanese sunscreens—for extra sun protection and a non-sticky, film-free formula. Second, it helps with a long list of scalp concerns thanks to a formula rich in niacinamide and anti-inflammatory ginseng.

Colourscience Sunforgettable SPF50 Sunscreen Powder

Preferably: Sunscreen in powder form for different skin tones

Size: 6g

Why we love it: Mineral sunscreens offer excellent physical protection from UV rays, but often come in chalky formulas that can leave a white film. That’s where Colourscience’s zinc-based brush-on sunscreen comes in, offering people with a range of skin tones a way to protect the scalp’s parts without making them greasy. The blend also contains antioxidants that neutralise free radicals to ward off UV-related damage and a powdered form of hyaluronic acid to keep your scalp comfortably moisturised. Well worth the money.

Coola SPF30 Organic Scalp and Hair Mist

Preferably: Sunscreen spray for the scalp

Size: 75ml

Why we love it: For a quick and easy application right at the roots, use Coola’s SPF 30 spray. “The nozzle easily penetrates my thick afro hair and distributes sun protection exactly where it is needed. Although it is not greasy, it is not unpleasantly drying either,” says beauty writer Tracy Achonwa. “On very hot days when the sun is beating down, it is super soothing to apply, as the centella asiatica and panthenol soothe the sting.”

Mineral partial powder SPF35

Preferably: Spray-on sun protection powder

Size: 20g

Why we love it: Another great sunscreen powder from Supergoop features a convenient spray nozzle and SPF 35. It can also be used as a dry shampoo and is a great choice for protecting the crown and roots from harmful rays without the feeling of a greasy sunscreen. Since it only comes in one shade, we recommend it for lighter scalps – it blends best on lighter skin and light hair.

Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil

Best for: sun-tanned strands

Size: 100ml

Why we love it: Not only does it nourish and perfume your hair with an incredible neroli aroma, but it also contains antioxidants to protect against pollution and UV damage. A leader in vegan hair care, Aveda’s mist is made with potent plant extracts and uses natural UV filters that create a light protective shield around the strands and block harmful rays.
