As part of our Money blog’s Cheap Eats series, we ask Michelin-starred chefs to pick their favourite cheap eats near them. We’ve rounded up our two entries from North Yorkshire – where two of the country’s best chefs have restaurants.

The old naked man in Settle
Michael says: “If I’m ever out mountain biking with the kids, this place is on one of our routes. We go over the peaks – it’s 12 miles over the peaks of the Yorkshire Dales – and then down to Settle. I’ve always taken the kids there, whether for a hot chocolate and cake or a sandwich. It’s so beautiful, really popular (for good reason) and right in the middle of Settle, a lovely little town. If I’m out on my road bike alone and doing a big ride, say 30-50 miles, it’s on the way home and just before a horrific climb in the area – 20% gradient – I stop at The Naked Man and mentally prepare myself for it. Even my friends stop there for caffeine and something to eat before the final ride. It’s in a great location, opposite the market square and is a traditional old fashioned pub that I love. The food is great value and the service is brilliant.”
Paradise Food, at Daleside Nurseries
Michael says: “The head chef here is wonderful and we’ve known each other for a long time. It started as a pop-up in a garden centre and is now a full-time restaurant. They’ve had a really varied career, a great head chef, which is reflected in Paradise. They work hard and have core values that I really respect and I just love coming here for a great meal. It’s super popular.”

Beef, at Courtyard Dairy
Michael says: “This is just over the peaks, outside Settle and towards the Lake District. They are very famous and make our cheese for us. The team are super passionate and a few years ago they expanded the cheese shop and built a pizzeria (among other things, like a museum). It’s so good here, very cool and the views are just breathtaking. Our restaurant manager is Italian and even she raves about it. That’s when you know it’s good. The toppings are a little different and it’s only 15 minutes away so we come by often.”

Shaun says: “North Yorkshire offers a huge choice of superb restaurants and we are incredibly lucky to have so many on our doorstep. My first recommendation is a traditional country inn in a picturesque village in the Yorkshire Dales. Enjoy a scenic walk through the surrounding countryside before stopping for lunch – the light lunch menu includes personal favourites such as Croque Madame with rocket salad and Black Sheep batter fish and chips.”

Shaun says: “If you want to explore Ripon’s distinctive charm, a trip here is a must. There’s great coffee, a delicious all-day brunch, a selection of sweet treats and a seasonal lunch menu full of fresh home-cooked dishes.”
