The CCSD program provides comprehensive legal services and counseling for families

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (FOX5) — There are advantages to having children in the Clark County School District.

“I just want families to come by, look around and see all the social services we offer,” says Family Support Center Director Cindy Flores.

Flores says the center has been helping the district’s families for two years. She says while some of the services are tailored specifically to newcomer and refugee students and their families, the majority of services are available to all families with a CCSD student, including CCSD teachers.

These services include, but are not limited to, health services with appointments at UNLV Children’s Hospital. There are career opportunities that include job search, resume building, and access to education and training, among many other services.

Another service is legal services through Nevada Legal Services, which provides free legal services to low-income Nevada residents. Flores gave an example of how someone might need legal help for something they can’t handle on their own.

“When someone rents an apartment, there may be problems with the apartment. And they don’t know what rights they have as a tenant if they want to demand that things be fixed. For example, do they have any rights? And they can talk to a lawyer to find out what rights they actually have. For example, how many days does the owner have to come and fix something that’s broken,” Flores said.

Flores says Nevada Legal Services is relatively new to the center and has only been there for a few months.

“They’re there every Wednesday and they offer pro bono work. And they can do almost anything that has to do with legal services, whether it’s immigration, tenants’ rights, child custody issues. Anything that has to do with the law,” Flores said.

She added: “If they are unable to answer certain questions due to the nature of the problem, they work with partners or refer their clients to other organizations, such as Legal Aid of Southern Nevada, which offers low-cost or free legal assistance.”

It is strongly recommended that you make an appointment to speak with someone at Nevada Legal Services.

English and Spanish speaking staff are available daily. The Family Support Center is open year-round, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., according to the CCSD annual calendar.

The Family Support Center is located at 1720 S. Maryland Parkway in Las Vegas. Walk-ins are welcome, but again, appointments are strongly recommended. The phone number is 702-799-0072.
