The City of Cleveland is installing safety barriers for bike lanes on a portion of Detroit Avenue

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – According to Bike Cleveland, the City of Cleveland has installed safety barriers along a section of the bike lane on Detroit Avenue in Ohio City.

Bike Cleveland held a rally on Wednesday to demand more safety measures throughout the city.

“The difference is that these are really low-cost, quick-to-implement projects. We’re excited because things can happen so much faster,” said Jenna Thomas, policy and advocacy manager at Bike Cleveland.

Thomas said that in 2023, 550 cyclists or pedestrians were hit by cars in the city. Nine were killed.

According to Bike Cleveland, 10 pedestrians and cyclists have been fatally struck by motorists so far in 2024.

Thomas said barriers could help make the streets safer.

“By putting up physical barriers between the bike lane and the car lane, it creates a physical separation between cyclists and reduces car-cyclist accidents,” Thomas said. “It also slows down cars, making the roads safer for everyone.”

Cyclists hope that these newly installed barriers are just the beginning.

“We hope this is just a small step towards many more protected bike lanes throughout the city, forming a network so you can ride east to west, west to east, north to south and always be separated and protected,” Thomas said.
