Elgin Community College’s Center for Emergency Services is hosting an open house and touch-a-truck event for the community on Saturday, September 14, at 815 E. Plank Road in Burlington.

This family-friendly event is perfect for anyone interested in ECC’s public safety programs or who has curious children. Discover a range of emergency equipment including:

• Sitting in a fire engine or police car for a photo;

• Watch demonstrations of fire, police and rescue equipment;

• Watch firefighters training at the fire tower.

Weather permitting, the LifeNet helicopter will land at 1 p.m. and will be open for tours. The Illinois State Police will send out their canine unit. There will also be food trucks.

“We are excited to open our world to the public so they can see what ECC’s Center for Emergency Services is all about,” said Ronald S. Two Bulls, senior director of academic programs and public safety training. “Our dedicated staff, successful programs, state-of-the-art facilities and our many partners in fire and police departments are here to showcase what a career in emergency services really looks like and our commitment to our communities.”

The first part of the event begins with an information session from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for anyone interested in learning more about a career as a first responder.

The session will showcase the first responder programs at ECC. Advisors will be available to help those interested explore emergency medical services degree programs and public safety careers, and tours of the facilities will be offered.

Those interested in attending the information session (9 a.m. to 10 a.m.) must register at elgin.edu/ces to ensure sufficient space and materials are available. The open house will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. No registration is required for this portion of the event.

Enrollment in ECC’s Center for Emergency Services and Fire Sciences safety programs has increased significantly over the past two years, increasing 34% in five years.

In November 2023, the Municipal Training Academy was officially opened at the Emergency Services Center ECC.

The Academy has expanded its role to meet the educational and training needs of community organizations, and now offers courses in all disciplines of local government and public safety.

This expansion will continue ECC’s role as a community service provider and continue the center’s goal of becoming the premier emergency medical services training facility in Illinois.

Partner fire and police departments include: Algonquin Police Department, Burlington Fire Protection District, Dekalb Fire Department, DuPage County Sheriff, East Dundee Fire Protection District, Hampshire Fire Protection District, Hanover Township Emergency Services, Hanover Park Fire Department, Hoffman Estates Fire Department, South Elgin Fire Protection District, South Elgin Police Department, and Sycamore Fire Department.
