A supermarket that was previously criticized for its price increases is now offering these shopping items cheaper than Aldi and Lidl.
Despite being one of the most expensive retailers for much of last year, Morrisons is now the cheapest of all six major supermarkets in our weekly comparison.
Every week since March 2022, we have been comparing the prices of a basket of minced meat, chicken, a 60-litre bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, tea bags, butter and beans at Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Aldi and Lidl.

Lidl has been the cheapest every week in a row since the end of January 2023, but was beaten by Morrisons last week.
Now it is at the top for the second week in a row.
This is mainly because they have released a cheaper pack of 25% fat mince which costs £1.99, making it 30p cheaper than Aldi and Lidl. Their mince also has a 25% fat content, unlike the 20% fat packs sold in other supermarkets.
This means the bill at Morrisons this week is again £11.97, making it the cheapest grocery store of the six supermarkets.
In the summer of 2022, when the cost of living crisis first hit, shoppers accused Morrisons of “laughing at” customers with its regular price increases. Morrisons went from being the cheapest store to the most expensive in just a few weeks.
Morrisons’ win puts Lidl in second place with a bill of £12.11, closely followed by Aldi at £12.14. The three most expensive stores are also close together in terms of price: Tesco at £12.32 and Sainsbury’s and Asda jointly the most expensive at £12.33.
Aldi disputes the results of our weekly comparison, saying it does not take into account comparable products or “the higher quality” of its products. For example, the supermarket says Aldi beans are 20g heavier than Sainsbury’s and that Aldi tea bags “are of better quality than the comparable products used”.
Asda also disagrees with our comparison, saying that our small selection of products does not reflect the full price picture and does not take into account the offers. The supermarket says that its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest on the market alongside Aldi.
