The illustration app Procreate for the iPad will not integrate generative AI features and says creativity will “not be generated”

Procreate, the illustration app for the iPad, issued a statement on Monday stressing that generative artificial intelligence (AI) will never be built into the software. The announcement comes as Apple is going all out with its suite of generative AI offerings, bundled as Apple Intelligence. The design app also appears to be an outlier among rivals like Adobe and Canva, which have invested heavily in AI tools over the past year. Procreate also said that AI is a moral threat to human creativity.

Procreate says no to generative AI

In a post on its website titled “AI is not our future,” Procreate explained its stance on the technology that most tech companies are rushing to incorporate into their offerings. The post highlighted generative AI as a “foundation based on theft,” likely alluding to the various lawsuits filed against AI companies by artists, musicians, and authors who claim their copyrighted works were used to train the AI models.

The company also stated that it did not want to pursue technology that posed a “moral threat” to human creativity. While it admitted that choosing this path would make Procreate an anomaly in the design software industry, as most of its competitors have already moved to AI, it added that it chose not to use AI to keep the platform community-focused.

Savage Interactive, Procreate’s parent company, has made this even clearer, stating that generative AI violates company policies designed to ensure creators’ privacy and ownership of their artwork.

In a separate post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Procreate CEO James Cuda expressed his dislike of AI and also stressed that he does not approve of the path the industry has taken in integrating generative AI tools into design software.

Notably, the Procreate app for iPad can be purchased for a one-time payment of Rs. 1,299. A Procreate Pocket app for iOS is also available on the App Store, which costs Rs. 599 as a one-time payment.
