First released in 2018, the Dyson Airwrap is now a perennial favorite in hair care. Known for its ability to straighten, wave, and curl hair of all cuts and textures with unprecedented ease, the Airwrap uses intelligent heat control and an aerodynamic phenomenon known as the “Coanda” effect. (In case you didn’t already know, this attracts hair like a magnet, wrapping it around the barrel or brush head using a rotating vortex of air.)

Earlier this year in February (2024), the British technology brand released its “supersonic r‘ Hairdryer that weighs less than a bottle of hairspray and has radio sensors (RFID) to automatically adjust airflow and temperature. The hairdryer was first tried and tested in salons, and Backstage at shows during the Fall/Winter 2024 seasonand is now saving the aching arms of hairdressers around the world.

Now it’s the Airwrap’s turn to get an innovative makeover, as Dyson has just announced that it will launch the “Airwrap id” later this month (August 2024). It might sound a bit like a futuristic device from Luc Besson’s 1997 sci-fi fantasy film. The Fifth Elementreminiscent of scenes in which nails are painted or Eye shadow is applied at the touch of a button. But that’s exactly how (well, almost) the Dyson “Airwrap id” works.

After downloading the MyDyson app, which connects wirelessly to the machine via Bluetooth, users can set a program using id curl – a series of personalized curling sequences developed by Dyson engineers that work with each head. A press of the machine’s power button then automatically executes the pattern selected based on the desired look.

“The app guides the user through each step based on their profile to make curling easier,” says Low Chen Nyeow, Associate Design Manager at Dyson Beauty. “Customizable temperature settings change the high and low temperatures for thermal comfort based on personal preference, and maintenance notifications remind the user to clean their filter.”

There are also three new attachments to complement the existing set of 13 Airwrap attachments. The ‘conical’ barrel is designed for tighter and more defined curls at the root, while the ‘Wave+Curl’ diffuser distributes airflow in two ways to accentuate waves, curls and curls. And finally, the blade concentrator delivers high-precision airflow for smooth hair. “User feedback has shown that they value convenience. For us, connectivity is about developing ways to help them get the most out of Dyson machines. And id curl offers ease of use and a truly personalized experience,” says Chen Nyeow.

But wait, there’s more, because at the same time as “Airwrap id,” Dyson will also launch “Chitosan,” its first-ever hair styling product line. Made with “Triodetic” technology, the range takes its name from the cell bond that gives the oyster mushroom its characteristic structure. The formulas of the debut products – four pre-styling creams with different levels of care and a moisturizing post-style serum – create a network of “flexible bonds” to maintain the styles created by Dyson without overloading the hair.
