The Pixel Watch 3 introduces a grid-style app launcher

In brief

  • Thanks to Wear OS 5, the Pixel Watch 3 has a grid-based app launcher.
  • This long-awaited feature has not been officially available as part of the Wear OS experience in the past.

Google Pixel Watch 3 users can now access apps more efficiently than ever before, thanks to a new grid view available in the device’s library of installed apps. In the past, users were limited to a list-style app drawer, which often meant excessive vertical scrolling. Grid view speeds up the process by showing more apps on the screen at once. Given the larger screen real estate of the latest range, especially the new 45mm model, this option is particularly attractive.

Notably, the original app list showed both the icon and name of each installed app. In grid view, the watch only shows the apps themselves, forcing users to be aware of exactly what tools they have installed. Given that many smartwatch users keep a short list of apps, this shouldn’t be a big issue for most. However, if you have a long app list with choices that you don’t use often, you may need to memorize some icons before switching to grid mode.

Users can also always opt to keep the original format and stick with a list-style app drawer. Like the Apple Watch, both organization options are readily available. In any case, Pixel Watch 3 users can explore many new app-related updates, including the brand new Recorder app, offline functionality in Google Maps, and more. The device is available for pre-order now and is set to officially hit shelves on September 10.
