The PS Stars points system is changing, but not for the better

Sony has announced that the PS Stars Points System is changing, and it’s not good news for members. PlayStation sent out emails tonight informing members that their points will expire much sooner, starting in October 2024. And starting in March 2025, certain purchases will no longer be eligible for points. Yikes!

Explaining upcoming changes to the PS Stars points system

According to the email we received, any points earned on or after October 24, 2024 will expire within 12 months if not used. Previously, PS Stars allowed members to earn points for up to 24 months. Simply put, if you don’t spend your points within 12 months, you lose them forever.

This will be a problem for those who don’t shop regularly on the PS Store and are slow to accumulate points. My advice is to claim the PS Store credit as soon as possible, and if you have credit left and the expiration date is approaching, spend the rest on digital collectibles. Something is better than nothing.

The second change, which comes into effect on March 1, 2025, means that all subscription purchases and renewals – including PS Plus – will no longer be eligible to earn points. This has particularly angered PS Plus members, as purchasing and renewing subscriptions is the most common way to earn points.

On October 24, PS Stars users will be asked to accept Sony’s new terms and conditions (via the PS app and web) if they wish to maintain their membership.
