The trendy accessory of the summer is great news for your hair

The silk scarf has made a comeback this summer. With roots in old Hollywood glamour – think Audrey Hepburn, Lena Horne and Grace Kelly – everyone from Kendall Jenner to Lori Harvey to Taylor Hill were spotted keeping their hair back with a simple piece of fabric this summer. Not only does silk look timelessly chic, it also offers a number of hair health benefits – from retaining moisture to reducing breakage. Maybe it’s time to ditch the cotton scrunchie once and for all?

How do silk scarves promote hair health?

Silk scarves are a breezy choice for summer that help keep hair smooth and frizz-free. “Silk is great for hair accessories as it’s super gentle on your hair,” says Lizzie Carter, founder of Only Curls. “The texture of the fabric reduces friction and helps hair retain its natural oils.” Similarly, sleeping with a silk pillowcase “protects the roots of your hair from drying out while you sleep,” preventing hair from becoming brittle, points out hairstylist and textured hair expert Charlotte Mensah. Silk alternatives to elastic headbands are “gentle and won’t pull or tug on your hair, resulting in fewer split ends. Silk is also breathable, keeping your hair and scalp comfortable—caps and hats can be hot and sweaty in the heat,” adds Carter.
