There is an interesting update for the map application

JAKARTA – With the iOS 18 update, almost all of Apple’s default apps received new features, including the Maps app. Although there is no noticeable AI addition, Apple has made some useful changes to the user experience.

Climbing route

After adding a topographic map to Apple Watch last year, a more detailed topographic map is now available on the iPhone via the Maps app. This application now displays a complete network of climbing trails, including 63 national parks across the US. Users can search for “hike” or “hiking” in the Maps app to find the nearest trail option. The information displayed includes trail lengths, elevations, ratings and other details. The trail can be filtered by length, route type (loop, point-to-point or out-and-back) and elevation, and saved for offline access.

Custom route

On iOS 18, Apple Maps supports the creation of custom routes, allowing users to plan specific hiking trails. At the starting point of the climb, users can select the “Create Custom Route” option to begin. From here, users can mark points on the map, and map apps will provide information on route length and elevation details. This app can also automatically complete the route with “Reverse”, “Out and Back” or “Close Loop” options. This feature ensures that the route created is safe and does not allow users to create routes that do not connect to existing trails.

Search at new location

Apple is also making it easier to find places to visit by adding a “Search Here” button. When searching for places, such as San Diego, users can tap “Search Here” to search for areas shown on the screen, rather than just the user’s physical location. Zooming in on the map reveals a “Search Here” button, giving users more control in determining the search area.

Save favorites

When users find a favorite climb or custom route, they can save it to the library for later access. Users simply tap “Add to Library” on the relevant trails. The saved hikes and routes can be downloaded and named for offline use or tagged with specific information for later use.

library

All content saved in maps apps, including location, route, guides, and pins, are now stored in a new library section, making it easier to access newly added and favorited content.

Notes

Users can create notes about specific locations in the Maps app by selecting “Add Note” from the menu. This note is private and stored on the device, visible only to the creator.

With this update, the Maps app on iOS 18 becomes more functional and personalized, providing a more comprehensive tool to support the user’s outdoor and travel activities.
