Things to do in Milwaukee this weekend: August 23-25

THE WHOLE WEEKEND | HENRY MAIER FESTIVAL PARK

This annual festival showcases Mexican heritage with delicious food, music and cultural activities on the lakefront. Highlights include a car and motorcycle show on Saturday and live mariachi bands. Through the Mexican Fiesta, the Wisconsin Hispanic Scholarship Foundation has raised over $1.7 million in scholarships for Hispanic youth since 1987. Tickets are available on-line for $20.

THE WHOLE WEEKEND | SERBIAN ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL OF SAINT SAVA

Immerse yourself in Serbian culture at this festival weekend. Treat your taste buds to a dinner of lamb shank or uštipci, deep-fried dough balls shaped like donuts. Rock and country groups Mt. Olive, Road Crew and The First Wave will perform, along with a number of Serbian artists. Tours of Saint Sava Cathedral will be available each day. This is a free event.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY 7 PM, SUNDAY 2.30 PM | CHARLES ALLIS ART MUSEUM

French-inspired melodies will fill the French Salon of the Charles Allis Art Museum on the opening night of this festival, with concertmaster Ilana Setapen and pianist Yaniv Dinur. On Saturday, guests will hear pieces by Bach and Mozart, and the weekend will conclude on Sunday with a performance of Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time.” Three-day tickets are available on-line for $230, and day passes are also available (prices vary by day). Each pass includes a glass of wine.

FRIDAY 5 PM | LATINO ART AT THE UNITED COMMUNITY CENTER

Guatemalan-born American painter Neto Atkinson uses art therapy to promote the personal development of his patients. The main themes of Atkinson’s work are awe and wonder, reflected in the bright colors and bold, electrifying lines that stretch across his canvases. His exhibition “Allusion to realities,” or ““Listen to truths” in Spanish, runs from August 23 to October 9. The opening reception is free.

FRIDAY 8 PM | THE RAVE

Rapper, songwriter and producer Juicy J is coming to Milwaukee with DJ Paul, co-founder of the Southern hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia, the group largely responsible for the South’s rise in a rap industry dominated by the West and East Coasts. Tickets are available. on-line.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY 6 PM | THE PABST THEATER

Four-time Grammy-nominated saxophonist Boney James headlines this two-day jazz performance. On Saturday afternoon, guests can take a cruise along the Milwaukee waterfront and hear music by Dee Lucas before the evening’s performances. Proceeds from the event benefit scholarships, school music programs and health initiatives. Tickets for the Pabst Theater performances and the cruise are available on-line.

SATURDAY 10 AM TO 5 PM | MILL POND PARK AND PLAZA, MENOMONEE FALLS

Over 100 artist booths, street artists, live performers, food trucks and a beer and wine garden will transform Downtown Menomonee Falls into a colorful canvas of entertainment on Saturday. This free festival began as an art walk in 2021 and has since grown into an annual showcase of local and regional art. Parents can bring their little ones to the festival’s kids’ art zone.

SATURDAY 11 AM TO 8 PM | MENOMONEE FALLS DOWNTOWN VILLAGE PARK

Held in the same month as India’s Independence Day, IndiaFest Wisconsin is a celebration of all Indian culture, including food, music, henna and more. It is hosted by Spindle India, a nonprofit organization founded in 2013 with the goal of strengthening India-US relations. Tickets are available on the IndiaFest website. website.

SATURDAY 12-8 PM | HUMBOLDT PARK

Radio station WMSE has been hosting this free music festival since 2010. This year, Guided by Voices is the headliner, and other acts include NEWSKI, Buffalo Nichols, and Jinksie. Humboldt Park will feature food trucks, craft beer, and more on-site entertainment.

SATURDAY FROM 3 TO 4 PM | CEDARBURG ART MUSEUM

The Cedarburg Art Museum will open its exhibition of works by Wisconsin artist Doris White with a reception on Saturday. White was the first woman to receive the Grand Award and Gold Medal from the American Watercolor Society for her expressive, atmospheric paintings. The gallery is open through November 10. Admission to the museum is free.

SATURDAY FROM 5 PM TO 11 PM | WANTABLE CAFE

Admission is free to this inaugural festival on Walker Street. Live music from Night Moves, Old Pup, Tobacco City and other artists will complement food trucks and local vendors. Wantable is a fashion company based in Milwaukee with employees across the country.

SATURDAY FROM 5-8 PM | NATURE CENTER WEHR

The sprawling 220-acre grounds of the Wehr Nature Center promise an evening of discovery. Surrounded by nature on all sides and with the sparkling night sky above them, guests learn about the center’s nocturnal creatures and take a guided tour. Tickets are available on-line.

SATURDAY AT 5:30 PM | AMERICAN FAMILY FIELD

The Smashing Pumpkins will open punk rock legend Green Day’s show at Brewers Stadium on Saturday night. For over two decades, Green Day has played popular hits such as “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and “American Idiot.” The band returns to Milwaukee as part of their “Saviors Tour.” Tickets are available. on-line.

SATURDAY AT 7:30 PM AND SUNDAY AT 2 PM | LAKE COUNTRY PLAYHOUSE

aura tells the story of a man named Mike who has the uncanny ability to read the color auras of others and predict their deaths. Mike’s uncanny knowledge will take audiences on an emotional journey in this play. Tickets are available for $10 at the Lake Country Playhouse. website.

SUNDAY | 273 E. ERIE ST.

This curated car show will see over 50 cars take over the block in front of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design academic building in the Third Ward. You’ll see six Excaliburs, a vintage car made in West Allis, as well as the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile.

SUNDAY 10AM TO 2PM | GREENFIELD FARMERS MARKET

Nature lovers will enjoy this free event, which includes a question-and-answer session with local nature and conservation organizations, raffle prizes, a beehive to view, and face painting. Experts from the Milwaukee Area Land Conservancy, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, Milwaukee Riverkeeper, Plastic-Free Kids, and more will also be on hand. There will also be plenty of nature-focused activities for kids.
