Three things we learned from the Cowboys training camp on Wednesday: Save yourself the drama

The Dallas Cowboys had a walk-thru practice in Oxnard, California on Wednesday, their final day of practice before welcoming the LA Rams for a joint practice.

Here’s what we learned on a relaxing day at camp, including a new (but equally competitive) side for a Cowboys position coach.

Hands to yourself

As the Cowboys prepare to host the Rams for practice Thursday afternoon, head coach Mike McCarthy made one thing clear: There will be no brawl.

After the NFL fined the Detroit Lions and New York Giants $200,000 following their heated joint practice, McCarthy said he did not want to see such drama during the Cowboys’ joint practice.

“It’s a waste of time,” McCarthy said. “I don’t want the guys to fight. That’s not toughness. That’s a lack of discipline.”

The Cowboys and Rams will split two practices on Thursday and Friday before opening the preseason against each other on Sunday.

Have to earn it

At the start of training camp, many believed that Cooper Beebe, the Cowboys’ third-round draft pick, would claim a starting spot after moving to the center position and begin the season on the first team offensive line.

Although the Cowboys’ coaches say Beebe is making progress as a center, they are not giving him a starting spot yet. Brock Hoffman is still playing primarily on the first team.

“It’s tough,” offensive line coach Mike Solari said. “He’s getting back up. Here’s a young guy who worked really hard in the offseason to get ready for this, but he’s getting better every day in terms of his initial quickness and his accuracy. … He’s worked hard and put himself in a great position to compete for the starting job.”

Search for dogs

Hungry, competitive dogs. That’s what defensive coach Jeff Zgonina is looking for.

But in the meantime, he is training the Cowboys’ DL in camp.

Zgonias other He is a professional dog handler/owner and has already taken Mastino Napoletano and Staffordshire Bull Terriers to dog shows.

“I’m strict with my dogs, but I love my dogs as much as I love my players,” he said.
