In the space of nearly two months, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump engaged in a disastrous debate that led Democrats to call on the president to suspend his re-election campaign, a 20-year-old kitchen worker shot Trump in the ear, and Biden withdrew his candidacy.

Biden endorsed Harris’s presidential candidacy almost immediately after the announcement. Her campaign raised $81 million within 24 hours of the decision.

Last week, she introduced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, to the delight of many viewers on social media who adopted his nickname “Coach Walz.”

Harris now leads Trump in four key swing states, including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan. The vice president is ahead by four percentage points in those states, an increase from Biden’s earlier poll numbers.

Trump campaign officials said the latest poll, conducted by The New York Times and Siena College had “dramatically underestimated” Trump’s supporters, according to Newsweekwho received a memo with the comments.

“Once again, we see a number of public polls released whose clear intent and purpose is to dampen support for President Trump,” the memo continues.

The Independent sent an email to the Trump campaign team requesting comment.

Trump himself reiterated this stance over the weekend, writing on Truth Social:

“I’m doing really well in the presidential campaign and am ahead in almost all REAL polls, even though the Democrats have switched their winning candidate in the primaries on an unprecedented scale,” Trump said. “I did great and WON in 2016, I did much better in 2020 and got many millions more votes than in 2016, but this year, 2024, is my best campaign yet.”
