Tina Charles overtakes Tina Thompson and is the second best WNBA scorer of all time

Atlanta Dreams center Tina Charles has etched her name in WNBA history, moving up to second place on the league’s all-time scoring list.

In Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Mercury, Charles hit a three-pointer in the third quarter to tie Tina Thompson with 7,488 career points. She broke the tie with Thompson early in the fourth quarter by hitting another three-pointer for her 12th point of the game.

Charles, 35, has played 13 seasons since being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft out of UConn. She was named WNBA MVP in 2012 and has appeared in eight All-Star games during her illustrious career.

The league’s all-time leading scorer was also on the court as Charles moved into second place. Mercury star and WNBA legend Diana Taurasi still holds a comfortable lead over Charles on the all-time scoring list, with 10,497 career points entering Wednesday’s game.

Charles will have a comeback season in 2024 after not signing with a team in 2023. She left Phoenix in 2022 before joining the Seattle Storm for a short time and participating in the team’s playoffs.

After missing the 2023 season, Charles agreed to a transfer to Atlanta, where she started 26 games this season and averaged 14.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.
