Insurance for a Fiat Panda is now £137 cheaper than in November 2023

Car insurance is one of the worst causes of the cost of living crisis, and for some, insuring the cheapest new car is a must.

According to data from comparison site Confused.com, the average premium has risen by £284 – or 43% – to a whopping £941 over the past 12 months.

Fortunately, there are still a wide range of cars available that cost significantly less, as our guide to the cheapest new car insurance shows.

Each quote is based on a 35-year-old man who lives in Swindon and works as a teacher. He commutes by car, parks it on the street during the day and in residential areas overnight, and drives 8,000 miles per year. He has no penalty points on his licence and a full 18 years no-claims bonus.

Although premiums have risen significantly overall over the past year, there is good news. The cost of insuring every car in our dataset has fallen since our league tables were last adjusted in November 2023, and there are some big savings to be had: if you own a new Fiat Panda, Toyota Aygo X, Hyundai i10 or Volkswagen Polo, it’s now more than £100 cheaper to insure than it was eight months ago.
