  • Story time for adults at the Continental Club | Tuesday, August 20 – Hear the highs and lows of the human experience as a group of story readers step up to the microphone to read other people’s stories (and sometimes their own) at this monthly story night in Midtown. $7, 8 p.m.
  • Broadway Across America presents Funny girl at the Hobby Center | Tuesday, 20 August to Sunday, 25 August – Featuring one of the most famous scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, and an updated book by Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, this musical tells the story of the legendary Fanny Brice, who rose to stardom from New York’s Lower East Side. With songs like “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “People,” it’s a show that has been loved around the world for decades. From $35. Showtimes vary.
  • Stages presents Catechism of a sister’s summer school: God never takes a holiday at Gordy | Tuesday, 20 August to Sunday, 25 August – Denise Fennell-Pasqualone is back as the irrepressible and hot-tempered sister in the latest installment of the popular series. This time, she’s teaching a summer school lesson to a group of kids who have been slacking off in catechism class all year – and she’s not happy about it.   • Back to school party at Feges BBQ | Wednesday, August 21 | FREE – The Spring Branch barbecue hotspot is hosting its annual family-friendly party with a make-your-own-sandcake station and play area, plus homemade corn dogs with sausage and free ice cream with every kid’s meal. Kids under 12 eat free. 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Future & Metro Boomin at Toyota Center | Thursday, August 22nd – Future and Grammy-nominated producer Metro Boomin keep the summer hot as they bring music from their latest collaboration to H-Town on the We Trust You Tour. Starting at $49. 8 p.m.
  • Phat Cat Swinger and the wonderful world of swing at the Miller Outdoor Theatre | Friday, August 23 | FREE – Come to Hermann Park and enjoy 90 minutes of original Disney music. Look forward to swing, cha-cha and mambo to classics such as “Wish Upon a Star” from Pinocchio, “Be Prepared” from The Lion King, “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, “Bella Notte” from Lady and the Tramp and more. 8:30 p.m.
  • Performing Arts Houston presents the 5th Annual Mariachi Festival at Wortham Center | Friday, August 23rd through Sunday, August 25th – Celebrate the creativity and lasting legacy of mariachi music and Hispanic culture as this popular festival brings some of the genre’s biggest names to Houston, including Mariachi Mariposas, Mariachi 7 Leguas and others from Houston and Mexico. Starting at $19. Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.; Sunday at 3 p.m.
  • Chris Stapleton in concert at Minute Maid Park | Saturday, August 24th – The All-American Road Show comes to Houston as country superstar Chris Stapleton brings Miranda Lambert and Grace Potter to the Juicebox for a night of country music magic. Starting at $44.95. 6 p.m.
  • Hidden Treasures: Country Music Fest at 8th Wonder | Saturday, August 24th | No admission – This evening of music from rising Texas country stars Mason Lively and Dustin De La Garza takes place under the stars in the brewery’s beer garden.   • RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars live at 713 Music Hall | Saturday, August 24th – This summer show brings some of the hit drag competition show’s biggest fan favorites to the Houston stage. Expect amazing performances from Angeria, Gottmilk, Roxxxy Andrews, Vanessa Vanjie and more. Starting at $42. 8 p.m.
  • Apollo Chamber Players presents Mekong Soul at the Miller Outdoor Theatre | Saturday, August 24 | FREE – This performance of music and dance tells three powerful and multisensory stories about life along the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. Told through spoken word and moving images, it is an accessible exploration of multiple artistic styles. 8:00 p.m.
  • National Band Competition at NRG Stadium | Sunday, August 25 – Kicking off the fall marching band season, this annual competition pits the nation’s best bands against each other on the Texans’ football field. TSU’s Ocean of Soul Marching Band is the highlight of the program, along with seven other HBCU programs. Starting at $15. 3:30 p.m.
