Trump presents himself at elections with a muted hairstyle and we think we know how he got his new look

Sometimes, as Donald Trump rambles on (and on) during his verbose speeches, our attention starts to wander—and eventually, it goes to his hair. Sporting one of the most infamous comb-overs of all time that desperately tries to conceal a scalp, the 2024 presidential candidate has proven time and again that his locks have the ability to defy gravity (the ’70s were Trump’s worst hair decade, by the way). Added to the thin, feathery texture that lifts at the slightest breeze is the color of his locks. Actually, we should make that plural, since the color of Trump’s mane changes almost as often as the political “facts” he so confidently spouts.

In my 20+ years as a hair and beauty reporter, I’ve witnessed many hair color changes, and on August 14, 2024, it was obvious that the former president had once again made a change, and not alone. The politician, business owner and convicted felon showed up in West Palm Beach, FL, to cast his vote in the Florida primary, showing off a lighter, brighter shade. Trump’s sometimes orange, sometimes blonde locks had more of a silvery effect, apparently due to him spending time with a hairdresser and using a professional hair color formula.

His new hair color required a professional

Once the proud owner of a blonde mane, Donald Trump has now apparently lost a significant amount of hair color. As a 78-year-old, it’s only natural that his locks have turned gray, but the former Apprentice host seems to have said goodbye to that color, opting instead to relive his youth with hair dye. It has been widely reported that Trump prefers to return to his original blonde roots, but is often too impatient to wait for the formulas to take effect, leaving the former president with orange tones. Battling to beat his younger and always well-styled opponent Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, Trump seems to have finally found some extra time in his schedule to treat himself to a proper salon treatment.

The lighter look of his West Palm Beach locks is most likely the result of a professional toner that was left in long enough to tone down the brassy orange or blonde and give his locks a more subtle silvery blonde tone. In the future, a blue or purple shampoo will help keep the brassy orange and yellow tones at bay, but Trump will need to make another appointment with a hairdresser at some point if he wants to keep his lighter look — toner shampoos are great for maintenance, but can’t produce bold colors. He will also need to make an appointment with a makeup artist to help tone down his notoriously orange face.
