The U.S. men’s national basketball team has arrived in France for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with the burden of history in its luggage.

Since men’s basketball was first accepted as an Olympic sport in 1936, the Americans have dominated the competition, winning 16 of the 19 Olympic Games they have competed in, including all of the last four after finishing a disastrous third at the 2004 Athens Games.

The next obstacle on the way to the fifth gold medal in a row is a familiar one.

On Thursday, the US team will face Serbia in the semifinals of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The winner will secure a medal in the final against France or Germany.

It is the third meeting between the two countries in the last 22 days. The Americans defeated Serbia 105-79 in a friendly match in Abu Dhabi on July 17 and won the two teams’ first game of the Olympics 110-84 in a return match on July 28.

The Serbians are led by Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokić, who has been named NBA MVP in three of the last four seasons. Jokić put on a characteristically brilliant performance for his country in a 95-90 overtime win over Australia in the quarterfinals last Tuesday, posting 21 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

Jokić is one of four NBA players on the Serbian roster, which also includes Bogdan Bogdanović, Nikola Jović and Vasilije Micić.

“We can’t get complacent because we beat them twice,” U.S. coach Steve Kerr said Wednesday. “We have to be ready for their best performance. We have to think about what they’re going to do differently. Jokić could play 40 minutes, I guess. What else do they have up their sleeve?”

In the win over Serbia in group play, LeBron James had 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, while Kevin Durant came off the bench to score 23 points and convert eight of his nine shots, including all five of his 3-pointers.
