The Milwaukee Brewers begin their final interleague series of the season on Friday night when they face the Oakland A’s at the Oakland Coliseum.
Right-hander Aaron Civale (4-8, 4.78) starts for the Brewers (73-54) for the first time in seven days, while left-hander JP Sears (10-8, 4.15) starts for the A’s.
An eventful first inning
Things didn’t start well for Civale, who allowed a home run to Lawrence Butler and needed a total of 33 pitches to get through the second half of the first inning.
But the offense picked him up in the second inning, forcing Sears to throw 34 pitches. He also gave up a five-runer to the Brewers, with Rhys Hoskins delivering the big blow with a three-run home run to left on singles by Willy Adames and Gary Sánchez.
One pitch later, Joey Ortiz hit a strike to center as Milwaukee ended a four-game home run. Andruw Monasterio followed with a single and scored two batters later when Jackson Chourio hit a single to left and Miguel Andujar gave it away.
The five-run inning was Milwaukee’s strongest since August 8, when the team scored five runs in the fifth inning to celebrate a 16-7 victory in Atlanta.
The Brewers also had their 19th batting average, their first since the fifth inning in Atlanta.
