Tylan Deams: “The more I learn and engage in education, the more I fall in love”

Since arriving at NC State College of Education, science student and adjunct instructor Tylan Deams has taken advantage of numerous opportunities to get involved in the classroom, allowing her to grow as an educator.

She also served as orientation leader this past summer, helping to build a sense of community and belonging among new students, hopefully making their transition to NC State a little easier.

Teaching Fellows receive up to $8,250 per year in forgiven loans to teach science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or special education and take advantage of numerous opportunities for personal and professional development.

Meet Tylan:

Most significant moment so far: During my observations, I work with students. I enjoy helping students with their coursework and learning more about them and their talents and abilities.

My best experience so far: Attended (USC 110 Freshman Advancement Seminar). It gave me a lot of insight into the experiences of students (from diverse backgrounds) at NC State and the ways they manage their identities in the classroom.

What I have learned so far about what it means to be an educator: There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that. Not only because we’re overseeing a room full of students, but also because taking responsibility for how you advocate for yourself, or reflecting on yourself after every class and evaluating some of your strengths and weaknesses when navigating a classroom, is extremely important. Moreover, these skills are what keep us going as educators.

Why I still want to become an educator: The more I learn and get involved in education, the more I fall in love with it. I love being in the classroom and I love learning new things about how to get students more involved and everything in between. I’ve always wanted to pursue a career that makes me happy and excited and I found it in teaching.

Why I love the College of Education:

I love that the College of Education is always looking for new ways to reach out to its students and is always creating opportunities to learn and grow from one another. There are so many events that are just about getting to know one another because the College of Education really understands the power of building community.
