UK cities with the cheapest cinema tickets revealed

The cinema is the perfect place to sit back, relax and let the magic of films transport you to a new world, but sometimes the trip can be quite expensive.

For city dwellers, especially Londoners, going to the cinema – especially during the cost of living crisis – can be too expensive for a regular evening out.

But a new study has revealed where you can get the cheapest movie tickets, and with a number of exciting films like The Marvels and Wonka still coming to theaters in 2023, some people may be looking for the best places to watch movies on a budget.

Credit card company Aqua has examined the average price of a cinema ticket and analysed data from 30 of the UK’s most populous cities to find out which cities offer the cheapest tickets for cinema-goers.

Kingston upon Hull was named the city with the cheapest cinema tickets, with an average price of £7.63 per ticket. Newport is a close second with an average price of £8.00.

The company has also compiled a list of the cities where cinema visits are, on average, the most expensive. Unsurprisingly, London takes first place with an average ticket price of £15.

Fourth and fifth place on the list are shared by several cities: in Birmingham and Sheffield, cinema tickets cost an average of £12.72, while in cities such as Liverpool and Edinburgh the average price is slightly cheaper at £12.71 per ticket.

Of course, cinema ticket prices can depend on the specific cinema, as prices usually differ between major chains such as Odeon and Vue and independent cinema chains such as Curzon and Everyman Cinemas.

These brands also offer membership deals for regulars who want to save money. By purchasing one of these memberships, people can enjoy the cinema at a cheaper price.

Sharvan Selvam, Commercial Director at Aqua, says: “No matter where you live, going to the cinema can be quite expensive, as Barbenheimer recently reminded us. But there are a few simple steps film lovers can take to keep costs down and still enjoy new films on the big screen.

“Many cinemas offer discounted tickets, so check their websites before booking and take advantage of offers such as Groupon or Tesco Clubcard vouchers.

“Most theaters also offer discounted tickets for children and seniors, so check in advance to make sure you get the best price.”
