WILLIAMSPORT — UPMC Williamsport has again received accreditation as a Level II Trauma Center from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF). This accreditation will be effective October 1, 2024.

“Since our designation as a Level II Trauma Center in 2021, our care teams have been instrumental in saving thousands of lives,” said Ronen Elefant, MD, trauma surgeon and medical director of trauma services, UPMC of North Central Pa. “On average, we have cared for over 1,300 individuals annually with a remarkable 98% survival rate. While these statistics underscore our clinical expertise, the true measure of our success is evident in the lives we impact. Every life saved underscores our commitment to providing exceptional, high-level clinical care here in Williamsport.”

The PTSF accredits trauma centers in Pennsylvania at four levels. UPMC Williamsport was awarded the maximum three-year reaccreditation, highlighting the program’s exceptional clinical care, performance improvement, patient safety and commitment. This achievement reflects a comprehensive review process that has confirmed these high standards by independent reviewers and the PTSF Board of Directors.

UPMC Williamsport is one of only three trauma centers serving the 12-county region of north central Pennsylvania.

“In 2021, we set a new standard for care in the region, and three years later, we proudly celebrate a program that has grown significantly and continues to provide lifesaving benefits to our patients and community,” said Patti Jackson-Gehris, president of UPMC Williamsport and UPMC of North Central Pa.

Providing advanced trauma care requires collaborative teamwork across multiple hospital departments to ensure 24-hour availability for the seriously injured. Trauma surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, cardiac surgeons, radiologists, nurses and support staff all bring specialized training and expertise to the treatment of traumatic injuries. In addition to their clinical duties, UPMC’s trauma specialists are also involved in education and outreach with a focus on injury prevention.
