US Army trains military health personnel at HonorHealth Trauma Center

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – HonorHealth helps military personnel provide practical trauma care through lifelike simulations.

Located at Osborn Medical Center, the 15,000-square-foot training facility is equipped with practice rooms to help staff complete their training.

“If we need to send them overseas, this group is responsible for that, so this training is really important for them,” said Roxanne Flynn, HonorHealth’s director of military-community partnerships.

From fake blood to high-tech mannequins that breathe and interact with trainees, the goal is to put them in highly stressful situations and simulate exercises so they are well prepared to provide critical care on the battlefield.

“They think critically despite great fear and that is what they have to do on the battlefield. That is why we try to emulate that here so that they have the best experience,” said Fynn.

Since 2004, the program has trained more than 3,500 soldiers and airmen in trauma and operational skills. The program is completely free for these employees.

“The military does not have a Level 1 trauma center in the United States. Civilians have Level 1 trauma centers. So when you bring the military into your Level 1 trauma center and work with them to care for your patients, they learn these different methods of battlefield medical care,” Flynn said.
