US flag football quarterback claims he is “better than Patrick Mahomes”

Patrick Mahomes threw a flag during the game.

On Wednesday, flag football quarterback Darrell Doucette spoke to TMZ about how he would not only be a great fit for the U.S. flag football team at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, but would also be a better playmaker than the Chiefs star.

“At the end of the day, I feel like I’m better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ in the game,” he told the outlet. “I know he’s the best in the (NFL) right now, I know he’s more accurate, I know he’s got all those intangibles. But when it comes to flag football, I feel like I know more than him.”

Later in the day, Mahomes addressed X, citing a video clip of Doucette with a GIF of rapper 50 Cent saying, “I like what he says ‘fuck me’ for.”

Last November, Mahomes expressed his interest in competing for the U.S. team when the Olympic Games are held in the United States in four years.

“I definitely want to. But I’ve seen some of these guys play flag football. They’re a little faster than me,” he told reporters at the time. “I know there are no linemen to block for you. I’ll be 31, 32 years old.”

“So if I can still move, I’ll try to go out and throw the football around, maybe in LA.”

As the quarterback for the United States national flag football team, Doucette has helped the team win a number of titles, including the 2021 IFAF Men’s Flag Football World Championship, the 2022 World Games and the 2023 Americas Continental Flag Football Championship.

In the latter tournament, he was named MVP.

Doucette later added to TMZ that he wasn’t saying he was a better football player overall than the two-time All-Pro, but specifically in the flag version of the game, which features a smaller field.

“I’m not saying I’m a better player overall, but until he steps into a 5-on-5 flag field, I’m going to think that way until proven otherwise! I’m a competitor and I’m going to have to be proven wrong,” he told the outlet. “It’s a totally different game.”

Doucette recently made headlines when he told the Guardian over the weekend that NFL players who want to play for the Olympic team will not have an easy time.

“We just don’t think they’re going to get on the field and make the Olympic team because of the name, right?” Doucette said. “They still have to go out there and compete.”
